Introduction
The APSCC continues to champion sustainability and environmental resilience across the region. Our recent scholarly initiatives, contributed by APSCC General Secretary Dr. Nandhivarman Muthu and Executive Director Dr. Golda A. Edwin, have made significant contributions to global understanding of sustainable soil management and ecological integrity, echoing the ambitions of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Soil Fertility and Sustainability: APSCC Leadership
In July 2020, Dr. Golda A. Edwin, alongside Nakkeeran Muthu, co-authored the chapter “Soil Fertility, Integrated Management, and Sustainability” in the Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals: Life on Land series . This living reference work underscores the critical importance of soil as a dynamic ecosystem—“the skin of the earth”—and explores integrated frameworks for maintaining its productivity, drawing on authoritative insights from the Soil Science Society of America and FAO .
This contribution reflects APSCC’s commitment to promoting soil stewardship—aligning with global objectives to enhance land management, support food systems, and combat land degradation under SDG 15 .
Editorial Leadership
Dr. Nandhivarman Muthu served as Section Editor in the same Life on Land series, particularly contributing to the “Landscape” entry . This chapter frames landscape through the lens of holistic sustainability, highlighting how landscapes—shaped by both natural processes and human activity—constitute meaningful, character-rich spaces for sustainable planning and ecological policy .
Convergence with UNFCCC Initiatives
Our scientific endeavors also resonate deeply with UNFCCC’s growing focus on land and sustainable ecosystems. The UNFCCC’s “Nature for Climate” initiative exemplifies global momentum for integrating ecosystem restoration, sustainable land use, and biodiversity into climate resilience strategies. The programme emphasizes nature-based solutions—paralleling APSCC’s emphasis on soil sustainability and landscape resilience .
Why This Matters for APSCC and the Region
-
Regional Relevance: India and other Asia-Pacific nations wrestle with soil degradation, unsustainable agricultural pressures, and changing land use. APSCC’s authoritative scholarship offers scientifically grounded pathways for policymakers, land managers, and researchers.
-
Global Credibility: Publishing with Springer’s series lends international recognition and amplifies our contributions within the broader framework of the 2030 Agenda.
-
Interdisciplinary Impact: By blending soil science, ecological perspectives, and landscape dynamics, APSCC promotes integrative approaches essential for sustainable development and climate adaptation.
Looking Ahead
APSCC remains committed to advancing:
-
Evidence-based land management strategies.
-
Community-engaged conservation practices.
-
Cross-sector collaborations that bridge academic research, governance, and grassroots action.
