IIT-Madras and APSCC partners for Sustainability Network Summit – 2014

The S-Net team at IIT-Madras in collaboration with APSCC had organized the yearly summit in 2014 that consisted of a case study competition titled GREEN VISION – 2020. The event attracted participation from several student teams from across India.

About S-NeIITM2014 Bannert: S-Net is a student run organisation at the Indian Institute of Technology – Madras (IIT-M) that works to promote various sustainable practices and awareness programmes in the campus. Established in 2009, the organisation is mentored by the administration and alumni of IITM, SNET follows a simple ideal – implementing and practicing sustainable life style and promoting it all over the nation through proven examples. The vision of a progressive administration, passion of some determined alumni and enthusiasm of a group of students has evolved into a mission to make IIT Madras a model for the nation to follow.

Alternative analytical technologies for soil nutrient analysis

Frequent soil testing is essential for sustainable agriculture to maintain and improve the existing soil structure and innate productive capacity of the soil. In this context, APSCC explores the feasibility of establishing and promoting a cost effective soil testing laboratories equipped with alternative analytical technology (AAT) for the benefit of thousands of farmers in the region. The team participated in the AAT for soil testing workshops organized by Shri AMM MCRC, Chennai.

Why alternative analytical technology (AAT) for soil testing: Indian agriculture occupies an eminent position in global cultivation of rice, wheat, sugarcane, pulses and vegetables. There is no simple, cost effective and reliable technology available to determine the level of organic carbon, humus, nitrogen, phosphMCRC2orus, potassium and micronutrients (10) in soil so as to provide the farmer the information he requires for maintaining the health of the soil. The present methods that are available require sophisticated, costly equipment. Depending on the information required, the cost of testing a single soil sample could vary between Rs. 250 to Rs. 1250 per test. AAT for testing soil nutrients: Shri AMM MCRC and IIT Madras has jointly undertaken a project titled “Integrated Knowledge Systems on Soil Nutrient Analysis through Image Processing of Chromatograms” funded by Department of Science & Technology and Murugappa Group for a period of 3 years. More than 12,000 soil samples have been processed for the determination of physicochemical properties, circular Paper chromatograms, image processing and case based reasoning. Software for image processing of soil chromatogram so as to know the soil composition, fertilizer recommendation and best suitable crop has been developed and was tested at various levels. National Sustainable Design Expo – Washington, D.C.

APSCC was invited to participate in the 9th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The team were given an unique opportunity to showcase their contributions to advancing sustainability while discovering the sustainable technologies developed by more than 400 university students in engineering, sciences, law, economics, architecture and other fields. The Expo brought together a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and organization and business leaders to discuss innovations designed to advance economic growth while reducing environmental impact and to showcase their approaches to sustainability to the interested public.

Held in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument, the Expo was a truly inspiring exhibition of innovative technology for a sustainable future. The event featured a high-rise farm, a 3-in-1 solar cooker that heats and generates power, or simple water treatment filters for villages in Africa. P3 student projects exhibit alongside EPA programs, other government agencies, non-profit organizations and businesses to showcase their achievements. Thousands of enthusiastic visitors of all ages attended this 2-day “sustainability festival” to explore and share ideas with the students and professionals in the field.
