Global Engagement · UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration

Generation Restoration.

The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) is a global rallying call to halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems worldwide. APSCC is proud to advance this mission through its Cities & Youth Challenge.

What is the UN Decade?

Reviving ecosystems for people and nature.

The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world. It aims to halt the degradation of ecosystems and restore them to achieve global goals — because only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity.

Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly and led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Decade is building a broad global movement to ramp up restoration and put the world on track for a sustainable future.

Why it matters

The last chance to prevent catastrophic climate change.

2021–2030The UN Decade runs to 2030 — the deadline for the SDGs and, scientists say, the last chance to prevent catastrophic climate change.
350M hectaresRestoring 350 million hectares of degraded ecosystems by 2030 could generate an estimated US$9 trillion in ecosystem services.
13–26 GtRestoration on this scale could remove 13 to 26 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
70+ countriesThe UN General Assembly proclaimed the Decade following a proposal for action by more than 70 countries from all latitudes.

Figures: UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Economic benefits of restoration are estimated to exceed nine times the cost of investment.
