Why soil matters

The living foundation of life.

Agriculture is the science, art and practice of cultivating plants and livestock — and healthy soils are the basis for healthy food production, the medium in which nearly all food-producing plants grow to nourish humans, wildlife and livestock.

Soils supply the essential nutrients, water and oxygen that plants need to flourish, and buffer delicate roots from drastic temperature fluctuations. A healthy soil is a living, dynamic ecosystem — cycling nutrients, controlling pests, improving structure, and mitigating climate change by storing carbon.
