Building Soil Resilience: APSCC Partners with the FAO Global Soil Partnership

Committing to soil health, organic farming, and local food systems as the foundation of sustainable food security for campuses and communities.

APSCC has partnered with the Food and Agriculture Organization's Global Soil Partnership (GSP), joining a worldwide effort to place healthy soil at the centre of food security and sustainable land management.

The partnership is built on a shared commitment to global food security and to the production of high-quality, nutritious food. For APSCC and the GSP alike, food security rests on three interdependent pillars: the availability of food, its accessibility to all, and its utilization in ways that deliver genuine nutrition. Healthy, living soil underpins each of these pillars.

The stressors on food systems

Food systems today face mounting pressure from climate change, land degradation, and a range of socio-economic challenges. These stressors are felt acutely across peninsular India, where communities contend with cyclones and prolonged droughts that disrupt harvests and erode the productive capacity of the land. Building resilience into how food is grown — beginning with the soil — is therefore not optional but essential.

APSCC's soil-first initiatives

Translating this commitment into practice, APSCC has advanced a set of initiatives that reconnect campuses and communities with the land that feeds them. These include local and regional food sourcing to shorten supply chains, organic campus menus, and on-site organic kitchen gardens that bring cultivation directly into everyday campus life.

In the fields and gardens, APSCC promotes polycultures and intercropping to build biodiversity and natural resilience, alongside organic animal products that close nutrient cycles and reduce dependence on external inputs. Together these practices treat soil health as the foundation for biodiversity, sound water management, and productive agriculture.

Soil health is the foundation on which biodiversity, water management, and agriculture stand — restore the soil, and resilient food systems follow.

A shared path forward

The collaboration between APSCC and the FAO Global Soil Partnership supports sustainable land management and the building of resilient food systems that can withstand the pressures of a changing climate. By anchoring food security in the living soil, the partnership advances a vision in which campuses and communities become models of sustainable, nutritious, and locally rooted food production.

Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals

This partnership directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — ending hunger through resilient agriculture, protecting life on land, and strengthening the partnerships that make global progress possible.
