The Green Campus Summit brought together more than 200 delegates from 12 countries, creating a global forum for higher-education institutions, policymakers and sustainability practitioners to exchange ideas on greening the campus. Against this international backdrop, the Campus Challenge Award spotlighted institutions that translate sustainability ambition into measurable campus action.
Recognising excellence in campus sustainability
The Campus Challenge 2013 Award recognises excellence in promoting sustainability on university campuses. It celebrates institutions that go beyond policy statements to implement tangible environmental initiatives — from energy and water stewardship to waste reduction, green infrastructure and student-led conservation.
By honouring VIT University, Vellore, APSCC sought to encourage higher-education institutions across the region to adopt innovative sustainability solutions and to treat the campus itself as a living laboratory for the low-carbon transition.
The campus is where the next generation learns not just what sustainability means, but how to build it — one institution at a time.
Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals
The Campus Challenge and the wider Green Campus Summit align directly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — strengthening quality education, building sustainable communities, driving climate action, and forging the partnerships needed to scale campus sustainability worldwide.
