Aligned with the World Soil Day 2024 theme "Caring for Soil: Measure, Monitor, Manage", APSCC launched a year-long Awareness Program Series on Topsoil Conservation — a Dec 2024 to Dec 2025 initiative engaging students and farmers in sustainable soil stewardship.
Observed annually on December 5, World Soil Day raises global awareness of the importance of healthy soil. Yet topsoil — the thin, living layer that sustains agriculture and ecosystems — is under severe threat from erosion, unsustainable farming, deforestation, compaction, monsoon runoff, floods and climate change. APSCC's series responds directly to this challenge.
A year of soil stewardship
The series is designed to educate students and farmers about the significance of topsoil and its conservation, while promoting innovative and practical solutions for sustainable soil management across campuses and farming communities.
Series roadmap
- Dec 2024LaunchSeries inaugurated on World Soil Day, aligned with the "Measure, Monitor, Manage" theme.
- Jan – Jun 2025Schools & Farmers OutreachAwareness sessions and enrolment across educational institutions and farming communities.
- Jul – Nov 2025Capacity Building & DemonstrationsHands-on training, soil testing and field demonstrations of conservation practices.
- Dec 2025Review & Impact AssessmentEvaluation of outcomes, adoption rates and public awareness gains.
Two programs, two audiences
The series delivers its goals through two complementary program components — one tailored for farmers, one designed for students:
Partners
The initiative is delivered in collaboration with Local Agricultural Departments, Educational Institutions, NGOs and the Private Sector — pooling expertise, reach and resources to embed sustainable soil management at scale.
Soil degradation affects an estimated one-third of the world's soils, and topsoil can take hundreds to thousands of years to form — yet it can be lost in a single season. Measuring, monitoring and managing soil is essential to safeguarding food security and ecosystems.FAO — World Soil Day 2024
Expected outcomes
By the close of the series in December 2025, APSCC anticipates an enhanced understanding of topsoil's role, increased adoption of sustainable soil management practices among students and farmers, and broader public awareness of soil conservation.
Aligned with the SDGs
