APSCC partnered with Oulgaret Municipality to host “Towards Zero Waste and Sustainable Municipality” — an awareness and orientation session for Bulk Waste Generators in Puducherry, marking the inaugural observance of the International Day of Zero Waste on 30 March 2024.
The United Nations General Assembly established 30th March as the International Day of Zero Waste, recognising the urgent need to promote sustainable consumption and production, and to support the transition to a circular economy. As a UN Observer organisation, APSCC joined the global observance by convening a dedicated session for the waste generators who most directly shape a municipality’s waste footprint.
The joint event was designed specifically for Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) operating within Oulgaret Municipal limits — institutions, establishments and communities whose scale of waste generation makes them pivotal partners in any zero-waste strategy.
Objectives of the session
The programme set out to raise awareness about the consequences of improper waste disposal, promote a shared sense of responsibility, introduce practical sustainable practices — source segregation, composting and recycling — and foster durable partnerships between civic bodies, institutions and citizens.
Highlights
The day featured interactive awareness sessions, hands-on demonstrations on waste segregation, composting and recycling, open discussion forums, and the recognition of model zero-waste initiatives already underway within the municipality — giving participants both the knowledge and the motivation to act.
Impact
The session translated into increased awareness among Bulk Waste Generators, concrete commitments to adopt sustainable practices, and closer alignment with municipal policy. APSCC’s role — through educational campaigns, collaborative projects and capacity building — positioned the initiative within the wider 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Zero waste is not the absence of waste, but a shared commitment to a circular economy — where segregation, composting and recycling turn today’s discards into tomorrow’s resources.
